Can I let you in on a little secret?
I am terrible when it comes to growing and nurturing plants.
It’s something I always wished I was good at but it seems in the past that any time I’ve tried I have failed.
But this year, things have been different..
Unlike previous years where I’d try growing various veggies such as lettuce, beans, and squash, which inevitably would end up in plant heaven, this year I have actually managed to have some success growing tomatoes and peppers.
Growing your own food is like being part of a secret club where the initiation involves a lot of dirt under your nails and a strong sense of superiority when you actually manage to keep something alive.

There’s nothing quite like plucking that first tomato off the vine or slicing up that slightly misshapen pepper for your stirfry, because, let’s be honest, homegrown veggies rarely look like the ones in the grocery store and their imperfection is what makes them real and delicious, like us.
It’s a privilege to have access to the resources needed for this green-thumbed hobby, especially when so many folks don’t have the same opportunity.
In just a few days many of the families in our Farms to Friends program will be sending their kids back to school for another year. We have a chance to make sure they send them off right, with bellies full of nutritious food that they need to power their brains and bodies for another school year.
With gratitude and hope for a bright school year ahead,
Josh
