In the current provisions, private land owners can log their land without even the most basic standards of environmental stewardship. That needs to stop.

When Sunshine Logging of Kaslo started clearcutting a huge area above Cottonwood Lake near Nelson, our phones were ringing off the hook. Concerns ranged from land stability to wildlife habitat to the conservation of a popular recreation area.

As a prominent visual of a widespread problem, this situation drew local attention to the deep impacts of unregulated private logging. Of course, this is far from the only example of this policy loophole being abused. This is a province-wide issue, often hidden deep in the mountains away from public view.

The health of BC’s wildlife, watersheds, and ecosystems depends on private logging being held to a higher standard. The Regional District of Central Kootenay is calling on the provincial government to take action, but they need your support.
