Want to learn more about mushrooms and mushroom foraging? Robert M. Macrae will talk about the ecology of fungi, fungi in popular cultures, edible and medicinal fungi, and foraging locally for fungi.
Robert M. Macrae has been teaching environmental chemistry and applied microbiology courses at Selkirk College since 1996. He taught at Brandenburg Technical University in Germany during 2016 -17. Previously, he worked as a Quality Control Supervisor for a diversified food company and a Production Manager on commercial mushroom farms. Mr. Macrae has a BSc Agr from the University of Guelph, an MSc from the University of Toronto, and he was a graduate research student at the University of Tokyo. Mr. Macrae’s interest in sustainability led to studies in and advocacy for a humane transition to renewable energy. Over the past two decades, Mr. Macrae has presented talks on mushrooms, Japanese mushroom cultivation, fungi in popular culture, the origins of Santa Claus (which has a surprising connection with fungi), and renewable energy where the connection with fungi is slim. He has led many walks to forage for edible mushrooms and to introduce people to the fascinating world of fungi.
