Food security is at the heart of a strong community. When we share the bounty, we nurture not just individuals, but also our connection to one another. For families struggling to make ends meet, a healthy meal can be a powerful gift of hope, security, and dignity.
This is the true spirit of Thanksgiving—coming together to ensure that everyone in our community has a place at the table. This Thanksgiving, Farms to Friends sponsor, Ben Glickman, reflects on what it was like during the holiday while growing up on a small family farm.

Ben says, “Growing up on a small family farm, Thanksgiving was a time when we enjoyed the fruits of our summer labours. Every year my parents processed a turkey we raised amongst the chickens in the spring and summer. Our kitchen table overflowed with the fruits and vegetables from our garden – my favourite was the baked butternut squash, flavoured with maple syrup made over a wood fire from sap collected from maple trees in the forest surrounding our house. Many of the recipes my mother cooked from were family heirlooms, handed down generationally. Some of my fondest childhood memories are of those times we spent together as a family, celebrating Thanksgiving with food we largely produced ourselves.
I recognize that not everyone in our community is fortunate enough to be able to create memories like this. With budgets stretched to the breaking point, industrialized and processed foods becoming the norm and time at a premium, holidays like Thanksgiving can be a cause of stress rather than joy. I am happy to continue supporting the Farms to Friends program – helping to support both local farmers producing a bountiful local harvest, and to help families in the Kootenays create lasting Thanksgiving memories.”
This Thanksgiving Ben from Bitcoin Central, is matching all donations up to $1,500 until Thanksgiving Day, Monday October 14th. That means your donation will have double the impact! $30 becomes $60, $75, becomes $150, $100 becomes $200 and so on.
If we can raise $1,500 by October 14th, we will double that to $3,000 which will go directly to supporting Farms to Friends households.
As an added bonus anyone who donates to our Thanksgiving Fundraiser will be entered into a draw for a copy of the cookbook, Cooking Scrappy: 100 Recipes to Help You Stop Wasting Food, Save Money, and Love What You Eat.
