Not many people realise that the EcoSociety is responsible for running the Kokanee Creek Nature Centre out in Kokanee Creek Provincial Park. But those who do have had the great pleasure of meeting our lead Educator, Joanne, and hopefully gone on a nature walk with her too!
“Why do I care about the EcoSociety? I care because they care about and promote outdoor and nature education.  The EcoSociety gives me the opportunity to share my own love of nature and science.
I work with the EcoSociety both as the Senior Naturalist at Kokanee Creek Nature Centre and as Education Program Coordinator. I mentor both young people and adults as they discover and explore nature and the outdoors.  Hopefully I challenge them to ask questions and to go out to learn the answers – and ask even more questions!
What are my days like with the EcoSociety? I began today watching an American Dipper bob through the water for food and then perch on a rock to sing.  On other days I get to watch a kid’s face as they see their first otter or watch a bird building a nest as we hike the trails near the Nature Centre.  Last year we watched Great Horned Owl young as they grew up at Kokanee Creek.  We even found cougar tracks to cast!
I am excited about the new summer camps we are offering at the Nature Centre this year.  We will be taking youngsters, preteens and elders out to follow tracks; monitor the chemistry and life of Kokanee Creek; learn some indigenous skills; go bird and plant watching (yes, you can sit and watch a plant!); hiking; playing games and so much more.
I love being in nature, exploring nature with kids and helping everyone open their eyes to see the world around them.  Thanks to the EcoSociety, I can share that love with others. Maybe I will see you this summer at the nature centre.  Come on out and say hello!”
