This week we’ve had two big wins at Neighbours United. We won an award for our Diversity, Equity & Inclusion work and exceeded our Giving Tuesday fundraising challenge goal. Thank you for being part of these successes!
Neighbours United is Charity Village’s 2022 Best Nonprofit Employer – Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (Under 20 Staff)🎉🎉🎉
We were honoured to be nominated alongside great organizations doing remarkable work, and are now overjoyed to be announced as the 2022 winning organization.
You may be wondering how we got to this point. Throughout the year, we engaged in a wide range of trainings and activities for our board, staff, and the wider community. Our team is committed to Justice, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (JEDI) work. Our board members and staff have participated in 4 JEDI trainings this year alone.
Here’s a closer look at our JEDI work:
- Our Indigenous Peoples, Black Peoples, and Peoples of Colour (IBPOC) and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Queer, Two-Spirit, Asexual/Aromantic and Intersex (LGBTQ2SAI+) committees, with staff and board members who identify within these communities, hosted community pride events and identified anti-racism learning needs for the organization to keep working to be a safer place for everyone
- Committees worked together to evaluate how our policies and procedures are working within the organization
- Staff and board members participated in a fundamentals of anti-racism workshop
- We hosted a workshop for our staff, board, volunteers and community to learn more about the Sinixt Indigenous Peoples. 75 people registered.
As a result of our JEDI work, our staff and board overall feel that we have a safer and more positive working environment. We have a diverse team of productive staff. We support our staff to celebrate their diversity, by taking time off to observe their cultural holidays, such as Indigenous Peoples Day, and supporting ongoing learning workshops around truth and reconciliation.
Our staff, volunteers and board members evaluated the effectiveness of our JEDI work to increase inclusivity, accessibility, and greater representation. The survey results reaffirmed that our JEDI work has created a safer work environment where people can show up more fully as themselves. We’re looking forward to continuing to create a safer, more inclusive and diverse organization.
