Voting can be overwhelming, especially for people casting a ballot for the very first time. I want to make sure you have all the information you need to get to your polling station on Monday, September 20th to be a voter deciding your next leaders.

To be a voter in the federal election, you must…

  • be a Canadian citizen
  • be at least 18 years old on election day
  • prove your identity and address

Where can you be a voter?

Find your local place to vote on Monday using Elections Canada search tool [link]. You need to know your correct full address to use this tool.

How can you prove your identity and address?

Option 1: Show one piece of ID

One piece of government-issued ID with your photo, name, and current address such as your driver’s licence or any other card issued by a Canadian government (federal, provincial/territorial or local) with your photo, name and current address

Option 2: Show two pieces of ID

Both pieces must have your name, and one must have your address, such as a utility bill, your voter information card or a bank statement. For a full list of acceptable forms of ID please visit Elections Canada

Option 3: If you have no ID

You can still vote! You must declare your identity and address in writing and have someone who knows you and who is assigned to your polling station vouch for you. The voucher must be able to prove their identity and address. A person can vouch for only one person (except in long-term care facilities).

Voting is more fun when you are with friends! Making a plan to go to your local polling station tomorrow with a friend or two is a great way to increase voter turnout and create positive lifetime voting habits for one of your first-time voter friends.

Don’t forget to:

With enough people turning up to vote, we can elect the leaders we need who will work towards healthy and sustainable solutions for you and your neighbours. So get out there and be a voter!
