On Wednesday night, I attended the federal NDP’s town hall meeting in Nelson on their plan for a Green New Deal. MPs Wayne Stetski and Peter Julian hosted the event, and more than 130 people attended.

Their proposal includes a transition to net carbon-free electricity, delivering a national building code update to make all new buildings net-zero ready, and rapidly accelerating the transition to electric vehicles.

When I got up to the microphone, I explained that our local governments are already doing much of this work while developing the West Kootenay 100% Renewable Energy Plan. I asked how they would support parts of this plan in the future. They replied that communities would have support for accelerating these plans.

I felt proud to work for the EcoSociety when our MP, Wayne Stetski, emphatically thanked our organization for all of the work it has done in the region. But I think the praise should go to our community members for telling their local governments that they want a 100% renewable future.

Again, the praise should go to the community members for supporting their local governments while they work with us to develop the West Kootenay 100% Renewable Energy Plan, with a goal of reaching carbon neutrality and 100% renewable energy by 2050.

It’s our community members living all across this beautiful region who see the writing on the wall, and more importantly, know what we have to gain by making this transition to a brighter future, here in the West Kootenays.

Thanks for your support . None of this would be possible without you.
