Location: West Kootenays/remote working from home office

Reports to: Executive Director

Type of Position: full time, 40 hours

Compensation: $38,500-$45,000 annually depending on experience. Benefits include flexible work hours, 4 weeks pro-rated vacation/year at your discretion, sick days, among other benefits.

Terms: starts no later than November 1, 2020, ends March 31, 2021, extension possible dependent on funding.

Location: home office (offices closed due to COVID)


West Kootenay EcoSociety is a non-profit community-driven organization that brings together local residents to protect the natural environment while building just, equitable, healthy, and livable communities in the West Kootenay region.

Since 1994, EcoSociety has worked to preserve wild places, air and water for future generations; to take action to reduce the crisis of climate change; and to promote sustainable local food systems. We organize hundreds of volunteers each year to build sustainable communities and protect our natural world. This position will be 50% Digital Organizing and 50% Digital Marketing and Communications.

Digital Organizing

The digital organizing component of this position will focus on big data analytics and developing systems and tools to use big data to further EcoSociety’s mission and program goals.

  • Develop digital distributed organizing systems to recruit, manage and activate volunteers and supporters.
  • Create content and strategies to convert digital engagement into further digital engagement and peer-to-peer interactions.
  • Execute social media and email list strategies for programs and actions.
  • Update, maintain, analyze and report on data.
  • Build relationships and work collaboratively with partner organizations, volunteers and staff.

Digital Marketing and Communications

The digital marketing and communications component of this position will focus on expanding EcoSociety’s intended audiences.

  • Support development of digital communications and marketing strategies.
  • Coordinate organizational calendar and timeline of digital communications & marketing.
  • Maintain and expand digital and supporter engagement platforms (e.g. email, website, social media).
  • Execute rapid response social media and emails at ranging hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Develop, test and refine successful content for social media, website and other digital channels.

  • Connected to local community or strong desire to build connections in the community
  • At least 1 year experience doing digital organizing and/or community organizing (ideally using engagement organizing model), marketing, communications,
  • Organizing skills must include: digital/remote organizing and working in teams
  • Team player and problem solver, but must be able to work independently
  • Able to quickly adapt to new technologies
  • Proficiency in English required. Other languages are assets
  • Outstanding verbal and written communicator, ability to tell compelling stories
  • Proven experience using multiple social media platforms in content creation and administrative roles
  • Strong ability to use common word processing programs, databases, and CRMs
  • Great organizational skills and attention to detail, self-starter, and self-managed
  • Able to develop project plans to meet daily, weekly, monthly internal goals
  • Good time management skills and ability to prioritize competing demands
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure
  • Able to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends
  • Able to bring a problem-solving orientation, and use challenges to grow
  • Experience organizing in campaign setting preferred
  • Experience working for non-profits preferred
  • Experience working with media and external communications preferred
  • Experience with digital peer-to-peer phone banking, peer-to-peer text banking, remote/video/phone group organizing, video-editing, and/or graphic design, are preferred


This position is funded through a wage subsidy program and therefore applicants are required to:

  • Be between the ages of 15 and 30, inclusive, at the start of the internship
  • Be a post-secondary graduate (i.e. has completed a diploma or degree following secondary education),
  • Not be in receipt of EI during the course of the work placement,
  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada (i.e. Canadian citizen, permanent Resident or person who has been granted refugee status), and
  • Self-assess as underemployed, meaning they are employed below their level of education and/or hold part-time employment, or are unemployed.
