Job Description – 2011 Downtown Markets Director

West Kootenay EcoSociety is a non-profit organization that works to protect the natural environment while building a just and sustainable post-carbon world. As a part of this mission, EcoSociety coordinates two weekly seasonal markets (Cottonwood Community Market and Nelson Downtown Local Market) and three evening street festivals (Market Fest).
We are seeking an energetic, passionate individual to coordinate the markets and help them thrive. The right candidate will have a demonstrated interest in food systems and environmental sustainability. The Markets Director will work 15-30 hours per week publicizing the market, coordinating vendors, and booking entertainment. The manager must be highly independent, self-motivated, and organized, and must have good communication and financial skills (please see qualifications and responsibilities below). The market manager must be available by March 15 for the start of the market season on May 19. The last market will be on October 27. Compensation will be $17 per hour to start, with a possible increase after a 30-day probationary period. This is a part-time, temporary position with the possibility of becoming permanent.

  • High School diploma, some college or university preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience handling money in a retail environment
  • Responsible and dependable
  • Self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision
  • Experience with publicity is an asset
  • Experience managing events or festivals
  • Ability to remain calm in a stressful environment
  • Strong Computer skills
  • Event planning experience


  • Work with other staff to conduct publicity for the market
  • Communicate with full-season and drop-in vendors on a weekly basis
  • Schedule entertainment for each weekly market and for Market Fests
  • Schedule and confirm drop-in vendors
  • Oversee setup and take down to comply with city guidelines
  • Resolve conflicts among vendors and between vendors and customers
  • Work with volunteers to provide public outreach regarding EcoSociety programs
  • Collect payment and issue receipts for vendor fees
  • Reconcile receipts with bank deposits
  • Ensure vendors and customers adhere to market guidelines
  • Report to Executive Director
  • Maintain relations with local businesses
