I’m Craig Mullin and proud to be the new Market Coordinator for the West Kootenay EcoSociety. I’m truly excited to pick up where Jesse, EcoSociety’s previous Market Coordinator left off and ensure the vibrant market culture we already have in Nelson continues to thrive.

I moved to Nelson from Vancouver in 2006 with a dream to build my own home and raise a family. With a background in music event promotions and starting up small businesses, I got creative to make a go of it here. Starting a small reclaimed furniture import business and selling my wares at trade shows and markets around the country, afforded my girlfriend and I in 2009 to homestead a property on the north shore of Kootenay Lake complete with a vegetable garden and chicken coop. Once we had settled, our dream was complete after our baby girl was born in the very same home we had dreamt of just a couple years earlier.

The first time I visited the Cottonwood Community Market was in the summer of 2007. I came to buy the fresh and delicious local produce from Slocan Valley farmers. While picking up my produce, I noticed a farmer had free kittens. I played with the little kittens and picked a brother and sister from the litter to take home and care for. I also made some new friends that day and watched the kids play. It all made me think how this was so different from the city and the urban lifestyle I was used to. That day got rid of any remaining doubt about the move, and made me feel like this was the right move. This is home and I’m here to stay.

I’ve run small businesses and I’m sensitive to how integral the markets are to our small community and how important it is to support our local food and arts economy. Also I’m a firm believer that working together is the best way forward in everything we do as people. Remember that team work makes the dream work!

I’m looking forward to meeting you and your family and enjoying the upcoming 2019 Market season in Nelson.
