Duration: 8 weeks @ 35 hrs/week.

Job Description:


Farmers’ markets in BC have been named an essential service during the coronavirus pandemic. Working with EcoSociety staff and volunteers, the Markets Assistant will help the Markets Coordinator with the day-to-day operations and management of EcoSociety’s two weekly outdoor summer markets in downtown Nelson, BC. The Markets Assistant will assist with the set-up, management and taking down of markets, coordinating volunteers, promoting EcoSociety programs and overseeing zero waste efforts at the markets. The Markets Assistant will also help manage, adapt and implement new safety protocols mandated by the provincial government to help regulate the spread of Covid-19. 


While EcoSociety offices remain closed due to social distancing protocols, all employees including the Markets Assistant will work from home on days when there is no physical farmers market. 


Key Responsibilities:


  • Help assist in the day-to-day operations and management of EcoSociety’s two outdoor weekly summer markets. 
  • Write communications for EcoSociety’s website, social media as well as posting farmer profiles.
  • Promote EcoSociety, its membership program, campaigns and projects. Coordinate volunteers to support markets. Maintain relationships with volunteers, community members and help in organizing supporters.
  • Assist in the monitoring of social distancing, hand washing, sign posting and crowd control at markets.
  • Run zero waste program at markets.


Required Qualifications:


  • Passion for working to fulfill EcoSociety’s mission.
  • At least 2 years of outstanding customer service experience.
  • Experience at farmers’ markets.
  • Team player and problem solver, but must be able to work independently.
  • Experience working for non-profits.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communicator.
  • Comfortable and excited to promote EcoSociety’s work and fundraise from individuals.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Expert-intermediate knowledge of: Microsoft Office, Google Drive, CMS, email management.
  • Organizing skills must include: digital organizing, working in teams.
  • Experience using databases and websites.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure.
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends.
  • Connected to local community or strong desire to build connections in the community.
  • Understanding of climate, conservation, food and social justice issues.
  • Physically and mentally able to work in all weather conditions.
  • Able to physically and mentally work on the front lines with people during the COVID pandemic.
  • Suitable home office during social distancing requirements.


This is a partially federally funded Canada Summer Jobs position, to be eligible, applicants must fit the following criteria:


  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment
