Hello friends! My name is Natasha and last fall I moved to beautiful Nelson from Guelph, Ontario. I’m excited to be your new Community Organizer and help transition our pristine region off fossil fuels and onto 100% renewable energy!

When I was in university I volunteered at an elementary school in India, at the base of the Himalaya mountains. I had the privilege of working with the students to organize a neighbourhood waste clean-up. The students and I were thrilled to be making their community clean, healthy and beautiful.

After the clean-up, the teacher told the students to toss their bags in the ditch, right on the edge of the neighbourhood they had just cleaned up. I was shattered and I felt ignorant. I didn’t think about where the waste would actually go. I realized that they didn’t have the resources to recycle and reuse some of the waste. They didn’t even have the ability to take the garbage to a landfill, because a landfill didn’t exist in their neighbourhood. The garbage bags just sat there, waiting for the wind, birds and stray dogs to tear them apart and spread the trash across the neighbourhood we had just cleaned.

We have the resources in countries like Canada, and in communities like the West Kootenays, to do more for our environment. We need to not only clean up, cut back pollution and reduce carbon footprints in our neighbourhoods, but to help, encourage and be a role model for others to also make a difference in their home.

When I returned home from India I made the choice to take responsibility for my carbon footprint, and to not stand for letting our communities, provinces or country get off the hook for taking action on our climate.

I chose to move to the Kootenays to enjoy the wilderness, to be a part of a community, and to take action on environmental issues and climate change. That’s why I’ve joined the EcoSociety and the 100% Renewable Kootenays campaign!

100% Renewable Kootenays is the ultimate way to make a difference in our neighbourhoods and communities. If enough people support the transition off dirty fossil fuels to clean energy then our municipal leaders will have no choice but to listen. Over 4,000 people have already signed our petition to support 100% renewable energy, will you be one of them? Join me and ask your friends and family to sign the petition! With this simple action, together we can multiply our people power and show our leaders the time to act is now.

I look forward to meeting each of you and working with our community!

Thanks for sharing,
