Last week I had the pleasure of attending the Basin Food Summit in Rossland, BC.

Being my first year as Markets Coordinator for the EcoSociety, it was eye opening to see more than 200 food buyers, food producers and food professionals all under one roof sharing their ideas with one another. 

First off, I was treated to nothing but amazing food over the weekend as everyone gathered for meals together at the Red Mountain lodge, where the symposium was held.  Local, healthy and really tasty dishes were served up from morning until the evening and gave us an opportunity to mingle while we appreciated some of the finest food our region has to offer. 

I saw many familiar faces who had vended with us at the Nelson Farmers Markets, and also met a few new producers who I hope will join our market family in 2020. 

There were fascinating talks from experts in the bioplastics, permaculture, and climate change fields, and a talk from someone who lived with all of his own trash for one year. Very real issues that Farmers and food processors alike can relate to as we all adapt to our every changing food growing, and food production landscape. 

We still have a way to go, but after spending two days with all the intelligent and committed people in the local food industry of the Kootenays, I was left with a good dose of optimism in a world where optimism can be scarce, that the future of food sustainability in the Kootenays is on track and moving forward.
