Support the protection of wildlife habitat in the Pend D’Oreille Valley!
The Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations (MoFLNRO) recently released an access management area proposal for crown land and conservation properties on the north side of the Pend d’Oreille Reservoir and along the Lower Salmo River. Access management (motor vehicle closure) is being proposed for the area to conserve wildlife properties, ungulate winter range and other wildlife habitat areas that have been degraded by recent increases in off road vehicle use and illegal trail building.

The proposed area along with the Creston Valley (both located within the ICHxwa and ICHxw Biogeoclimatic Ecosystem Classification (BEC) units together have more conservation listed species than any other BEC unit in  the Kootenay-Boundary Region. The area is being progressively degraded by motorized use. The access management plan is an opportunity to get some level of control established on where motorized vehicles can go and how much wildlife disturbance and degradation they can cause. For more information about the proposal, see the attached document below.

You can send comments to the MoFLNRO in support of the access management plan and protection of wildlife habitat until January 31, 2016. Please take the opportunity to comment, even just to say that you approve of the direction government is taking with respect to establishing and enforcing access management zones within the Pend d’Oreille Valley.

You don’t need to say much, other than expressing the following points:

1 – You approve of an access management plan, due to the increasing habitat degradation and wildlife disturbance as a result of motorized use.

2 – You are concerned that the conservation properties in the Pend d’Oreille Valley that have been set aside for wildlife and species at risk cannot function as intended due to current unauthorized motorized use and disturbance.
