BC Supreme Court Judge John Savage handed down a ruling in the Ktunaxa Nation’s case against the proposed Jumbo Glacier Resort on Friday April 3. The ruling states that the Ktunaxa’s spiritual connection with the Jumbo Valley isn’t sufficient to prevent its development as a mini ski city. Ktunaxa spokesperson Kathryn Teneese vowed that the fight would continue, and didn’t rule out the possibiltiy of an appeal.

The proposed development of 6500 beds, 23 ski lifts and a gondola in the remote Purcell mountains still faces West Kootenay EcoSociety’s legal challenge. Our petition asks a judge to rule on whether it is legal and constitutional to create a municipality with no residents and appoint a mayor and council. We hope to have our case before a judge in the next few months.
